The Symphonia ends the season with conductor Alastair Willis leading a varied all-strings program. Holst’s St. Paul’s Suite is oh-so-English with its expert balance of humor and pageantry. Montgomery’s Strum is a completely new—but listener-friendly—type of string writing. Based on a Persian folk song, Ascending Bird is a dazzling reworking of the myth of the Phoenix. The concert ends with the warmth of Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings.
