RECITAL TO SHOWCASE SYMPHONIC SKILLS OF BOYS & GIRLS CLUB KIDS
IN THE SYMPHONIA’S YOUTH OUTREACH PROGRAM
Kids participating in The Symphonia's youth outreach program, Building a String Orchestra and Self-Esteem, will present a string instrument recital on Thursday, December 12 at 6:30 p.m. at Naoma Donnelley Haggin Boys & Girls Club of Delray Beach, 1451 S.W. 7th Street, Delray Beach. Thirtyfive children, ages 6-14, from the Naoma Donnelley Haggin Boys & Girls Club have been taking lessons from Symphonia musicians and music teachers for almost two and a half years.
The program is designed to introduce children to classical instruments and music, both through hands-on experience and as audience members. The program is made possible through grants from Impact 100 Palm Beach County, the Community Foundation of Palm Beach County, the Virginia and Harvey Kimmel Family Fund, and Gail Biben and Stanley Waldshan.
"We get a bit emotional when we hear these kids play and see how far they have come in this program,” said Annabel Russell, Executive Director of The Symphonia. "It’s so rewarding to witness what a powerful, positive experience classical music can be for these children.”
For students in the program who have expressed a strong interest in and talent for music, the Symphonia String Outreach Program also provides private lessons.
“Studies continuously show how critical music can be to academic achievement," Russell said. "By continuing the Building a String Orchestra and Self-Esteem program we began almost two and a half years ago at the Boys & Girls Club, The Symphonia has not only given these children the gift of music but has also made them and their families proud of their accomplishments."
