"Waltzing with Strauss"
A New Directions Concert
About New Directions
New Directions concerts blend classical music with theater and multimedia to create a unique concert experience. They are the concept and creation of Music Director Alastair Willis.
Waltzing with Strauss
In Waltzing with Strauss, which is described by Willis as a continuation of Vienna's Riches (presented last season), he becomes a fictional Strauss sibling. From his vantage point within the family, this character goes beyond the household's talent to how Vienna's culture, gossip, emperors, trains, and more connect with the glorious music that defined an era.
Once considered scandalous, dance music was transformed by Johann Strauss I and his son Johann Strauss II, “The Waltz King,” into something that was sophisticated yet still tempted toes to tap and bodies to sway. Through much-loved waltzes, polkas, ballet and operetta, Music Director Alastair Willis brings the elegant 19th century world of the Strauss family to life.
Program length
This program is 90-95 minutes (including one intermission).
