Our Story
In 2004, three visionary individuals, Martin Coyne, Martin B. Stein, and Marshall Turkin, founded the Boca Raton Philharmonic Symphonia, Inc., now known as The Symphonia, South Florida’s Premier Chamber Orchestra.
Opening its inaugural season in the fall of 2005 with its Sunday afternoon Connoisseur Concert Series, the orchestra quickly established a distinctive artistic identity by bringing together distinguished guest conductors, acclaimed soloists, and an exceptional core of professional musicians.
At the heart of The Symphonia is its chamber-sized ensemble, typically comprising 35–45 core musicians. This intimate scale allows for exceptional musical communication and flexibility, while the orchestra can expand or contract to meet the artistic demands of each program.
Each season offers a careful balance of beloved works from the classical tradition, lesser-known gems, and contemporary works by today’s leading composers. This breadth of repertoire invites audiences to experience both the enduring power of familiar masterpieces and the excitement of musical discovery.
A distinctive feature of The Symphonia’s artistic vision is its New Directions series, conceived by Music Director Alastair Willis. These imaginative performances combine classical music and storytelling with theater and multimedia elements, creating memorable experiences that are charming, humorous, and entertaining.
COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS
The Symphonia’s artistic mission extends beyond the concert hall. For more than two decades, the organization has built meaningful connections through its educational, outreach, and community programs that make the experience of music more accessible and more deeply connected to the community it serves.
Educational Programs introduce children and adults to the richness of orchestral music, fostering curiosity, understanding, and a lifelong appreciation for the arts.
Outreach Programs bring music education directly to underserved young people who might not otherwise have the opportunity to learn to play an instrument, using music as a vehicle for confidence, connection, and personal growth.
Community Programs extend access to The Symphonia’s concerts and programs to individuals who might otherwise face barriers to participation, including people with visual impairments, wounded veterans, high-functioning young adults with disabilities, and those experiencing financial constraints.
These initiatives are an essential part of The Symphonia’s identity and reflect a belief that exceptional music has the power to enrich lives, strengthen communities, and create meaningful connections. Together, they bring The Symphonia’s mission, vision, and values to life.
